Nicolás Millán Prieto: Ejercicio Melancólico para Tiple Solo No. 4 by Óscar Santafé

This piece is a bambuco, a Colombian dance originating in the departments (states) of Tolima and Huila, but is now played throughout the mountainous regions of the country. The dance usually follows the story of two lovers flirting, a common theme in dances across Colombia. The instrument you see is the tiple Colombiano, a twelve-stringed chordophone which is a cousin to the tiple Venezolano and the cuatro, and descendant of the renaissance guitar. This modern composition follows a Spanish musical form, but the genre as a whole also has African and indigenous roots like many other Colombian dances. I learned basic tiple techniques and mountainous Colombian music theory from an instructor in Colombia, and then practiced this piece for the quarter based on what I learned.
