This piece is a bambuco, a Colombian dance originating in the departments (provinces) of Tolima and Huila, but is now played throughout the mountainous regions of the country. The dance usually follows the story of two lovers flirting, a common theme in dances across Colombia. This song, composed by Rafael Godoy and released in 1945 by Eduardo Armani and his orchestra, is considered one of the greatest Colombian songs of all time, ranked No. 7 by El Tiempo. It is also a widely known patriotic song. I am covering a 1990 release by Darío Garzon and Eduardo Collazos, a folk guitar-tiple duo from Ibagué, in their album “20 Exitos con Garzon y Collazos.” In the recording I play guitar, tiple Colombiano, and took the liberty of adding double bass, and sang. Below is a notated depiction of how the tiple plays the bambuco rhythm.
